About Us

Mission

Welcome hurricane Katrina evacuees to the Austin community by directing them to useful information and providing a hub for volunteers to 'plug-in'.

History:

This site began in the initial Red Cross shelter to guide the first wave of evacuees to services they needed most: FEMA registration, finding loved ones, housing, jobs, human services, and other charitable sites like United Way's '211'. It was intended as a temporary solution to fill the need until government agencies were able put the resources together in a easily accessible format.

Where We Are Now:

As the city and state governments have developed their resources, we have turned our attention to 'welcoming the evacuees' with an understanding that many will stay and become valued members of our community. We do this by linking to the official sites and listing other resources which fall outside the scope of government and other organizations. We also put volunteers and businesses in contact with each other with resource listing and the Austin Volunteer Blog.
